How Friendship Changed Everything

When McDougal arrived at Turning Pointe Donkey Rescue, he was a donkey in distress. His previous owner had tried their best, but he was living with miniature horses and an elderly mini donkey—companions who didn’t quite match his energy or social needs. He was restless, difficult to handle, and clearly unhappy.

One of the biggest challenges? His hooves. Trimming them was a constant battle. He would kick and resist, making it nearly impossible for the farrier to care for him. We stepped in to help twice, but despite our efforts, McDougal remained anxious and uncooperative. His owner, realizing he needed more than they could provide, made the difficult yet compassionate decision to surrender him to Turning Pointe Donkey Rescue—hoping we could give him the fresh start he so desperately needed.

And that’s exactly what we did.

The moment McDougal arrived and met other donkeys his own size and age, something remarkable happened. He found his place. He bonded with his new herd, and for the first time in a long time, he felt safe, understood, and at home.

The transformation was almost immediate. The once-nervous, resistant donkey became calmer, more trusting. And when the farrier arrived for his next trim? McDougal stood still. No kicking, no fear—just trust.

This is the heart of what we do. Rescue isn’t just about saving donkeys—it’s about giving them a chance to heal, to belong, and to thrive. McDougal’s story is just one of many, and with your support, we can continue giving more donkeys the second chance they deserve.
