Insights and Stories

Discover a wealth of information designed to empower donkey lovers and advocates

Meet Kai

I got several messages about this guy who was owned by a MS trader, so I snatched him up. Our good friend Fran from Crossroads Donkey Rescue in TN fired up the donkey express and picked him up Tuesday. Together they weathered the terrible storms that blew through TN on Wednesday. Then the donkey express was off again to take him to the University of TN in Knoxville. That is the same hospital that healed our sweet Savannah.

Meet Luna

Luna’s story is a very sad one. Luna found herself at a PA auction where she ended up being purchased by a kill buyer. Luna was in excruciating pain from serious neglect in caring for her hooves. She was in so much pain that she did not want to walk. Well, either the previous owner or the kill buyer became very impatient, and she was dragged across a gravel surface causing a severe abrasion on her back leg and a terrible fear of people.

Duchess Is My First Donkey

Duchess was rescued from a PA auction. She had a large growth on her muzzle. We knew we need to help her so that she received proper diagnosis and treatment for the growth. When we got her the vet did a biopsy to determine if the growth was cancerous or a sarcoid. See education page for information on sarcoids. It turned out to be a sarcoid and not cancer which is a good thing. The growth was also not interfering with her eating. Another plus. Below is a picture of the growth when we first got sweet Duchess.

Meet Savannah

I received several urgent messages from TPDR supporters that there was a donkey owned by a MS kill buyer in need of urgent medical care. She had bald patches all over her body and was severely sunburned and had several skin bacteria and fungal infections. Our great rescue friend, Fran from Crossroads Donkey Rescue, helped us secure her and get her to the University of TN.

Fran woke up before the crack of dawn to deliver our girls to the University of Tennessee for an early appointment this morning. She’s certainly a blessing to these donkeys.

Ribbons and her baby Beau

Ribbons and her baby Beau were rescued from a PA auction. They were all adorned with ribbons in their halters to make buyers believe they were coming from a loving family not a trader. This is a trick traders often use to try to get more money.

Cookie and Baby Elsa

Cookie was rescued from a New Jersey auction with a bun in her oven. There was a problem soon after Cookie gave birth. And it was a problem which, left unchecked, would have resulted in Elsa’s DEATH.

Meet Ali

This tall black beauty is TPDR Ali We found her in early October standing in a filthy pen at a sale barn along with a very small black pony and also little Shoddy.
